  1. Hi! First off, I wanted to say that this sounds like an amazing organization!

I heard about the Cedar Tree Institute’s cedar tree plantings, and wanted to share some info.

I am a graduate student at Michigan Tech University studying wetlands, of which cedar trees are a part. While cedar tree populations are decent right now, they are declining fast due to their lack of re-establishment, which is due in majorly in part to deer browsing. I think it’s a wonderful idea to plant new trees to give back to the earth, but I am concerned that this project may not be very successful. Nearly all newly established trees are being over-browsed, and there is little chance that a tree will make it past the browing height (which will take about 20-30 years because of their slow-growing nature). Seedlings will likely need to be planted with a deer-proof fence around them to ensure survival.

Again, let me tell you that I think it’s a wonderful idea, I just want to make sure everyone knows about the risks involved.

Thanks for you time in reading this!

    Sincerely,
    Aleta Daniels
